The ocean is one of my happiest places. I have passion for snorkeling and seeking out hidden reefs filled with rainbows of coral and unique marine life. The mindfulness brought about by exploring our oceans is indescribable. You grab your gear, step in the water and as you submerge, everything quiets. Aside from parrotfish crunching on coral reefs, protecting them from seaweed.
I am grateful to have realized dreams of snorkeling Australia's Great Barrier Reef in 2009 and Bora Bora's Lagoon in 2013. I was in awe of a remote Turks and Caicos reef in 2006. Approximately 5 years later, I led my family there to witness the breathtaking beauty. Only, the coral reefs were colorless. There were no fish to be seen. I was heartbroken. At the time, I lacked understanding about the devastating effects our behaviors have on our oceans, our earth. I now know increasingly warmer seas are bleaching our coral reefs and destroying marine life at an alarming rate. Australia's Great Barrier Reef has lost more than half its coral since 1995. A heat wave killed One Billion sea creatures in the Pacific Northwest this past July.
In the words of my young daughters, we can't let this happen. Our children need our help. Our Earth needs our help. Most importantly, spread the word. Please consider supporting Mission Blue's efforts to protect our oceans. For additional information, please view:
